Department Overview

The Department of Plant Production & Biotechnology at the University of Layyah is committed to advancing agricultural innovation through world-class education, research, and technology integration. Drawing inspiration from global leaders in agricultural sciences such as UC Davis and Wageningen University, the department merges the disciplines of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Agronomy, and Biotechnology to address the challenges of climate change, food security, and sustainable crop production.

Our programs emphasize a balanced combination of theoretical foundation, applied research, and experiential learning. Through modern laboratories, field stations, and greenhouse facilities, students gain the technical proficiency and research insight necessary to develop climate-resilient, high-yielding, and resource-efficient crop systems.

The department follows the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan’s curriculum standards, ensuring that our academic programs meet both national agricultural priorities and international scientific excellence.

Departmental Objectives

The Department of Plant Production & Biotechnology aims to:

  • Provide a comprehensive understanding of plant biology, genetics, physiology, and biotechnology.
  • Develop expertise in crop improvement, genetic engineering, and sustainable production systems.
  • Encourage innovation and problem-solving for climate-smart and environmentally responsible agriculture.
  • Strengthen research capacity in molecular breeding, genomics, plant protection, and bioinformatics.
  • Prepare graduates to contribute effectively in research institutions, agribusiness industries, and policy-making sectors at both national and international levels.

Undergraduate Programs

The department offers internationally aligned undergraduate degree programs that combine scientific knowledge, technical training, and research experience:

Program Offered:

Ø  BSc (Hons.) Agriculture with major Plant Breeding & Genetics (PBG)

Ø  BSc (Hons.) Agriculture with a major in Agronomy

Ø  BS Biotechnology

1. Plant Breeding and Genetics (PBG)

This program focuses on the genetic improvement of crops through conventional and molecular breeding approaches. Students learn about genetic diversity, hybrid development, molecular markers, and genomics-assisted selection, preparing them to enhance crop performance, disease resistance, and adaptability.

2.  Agronomy

The Agronomy major provides in-depth knowledge of crop production systems, soil and water management, cropping patterns, and resource optimization. It equips students to design and manage sustainable, high-efficiency farming systems aligned with climate resilience and food security goals.

3. BS Biotechnology

This program integrates molecular biology, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, and plant biotechnology to develop innovative biotechnological solutions for agriculture, industry, and the environment. Students gain laboratory expertise in gene cloning, tissue culture, and molecular diagnostics, bridging science and application.
