The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences (BS ES) is a four-year undergraduate degree program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the environment, natural resources, and the challenges arising from human interactions with the natural world. The program integrates biology, chemistry, physics, geology, ecology, and social sciences to prepare students for addressing complex environmental problems in a sustainable and scientifically sound manner.
Environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion have become global concerns. This program equips students with the knowledge and analytical skills to understand these issues and develop innovative, evidence-based solutions for sustainable development. The curriculum follows the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan’s approved guidelines, ensuring academic rigor and relevance to both national and international environmental priorities.
The BS Environmental Sciences program aims to:
Provide an interdisciplinary understanding of environmental systems, processes, and management.
Equip students with skills in data collection, laboratory analysis, and environmental assessment.
Develop competence in environmental policy, planning, and sustainable resource management.
Foster critical thinking, research skills, and problem-solving in tackling environmental challenges.
Promote awareness of environmental ethics and sustainable development practices.
Duration: 4 Years (8 Semesters)
Credit Hours: 130–136 (as per HEC guidelines)
Award: Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences (BS ES)
The program combines core environmental science courses, supporting natural and social science subjects, and practical fieldwork, culminating in a Final Year Research Project (FYRP).
Students enrolled in BS Environmental Sciences gain in-depth knowledge across a broad range of disciplines, including:
Fundamentals of Environmental Science
Ecology and Ecosystem Management
Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology
Environmental Microbiology
Climate Change and Global Warming
Environmental Pollution and Control
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Remote Sensing and GIS Applications
Water Resource Management
Soil and Agricultural Conservation
Environmental Laws and Policies
Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies
Waste Management and Recycling Systems
The program emphasizes hands-on training through laboratory experiments, field excursions, and environmental surveys. Students gain practical experience in sampling, testing, and analyzing air, water, and soil quality, and in using GIS and remote sensing technologies to monitor and manage environmental systems.
Graduates of BS Environmental Sciences are equipped for a wide variety of career paths in both the public and private sectors, such as:
Environmental Scientist / Consultant
Environmental Analyst / Planner
Environmental Protection Officer
Sustainability Manager
Climate Change Researcher
Water and Waste Management Specialist
Environmental Health and Safety Officer
Renewable Energy Expert
Policy Advisor / NGO Specialist
Employment opportunities are available in government departments, environmental agencies, NGOs, research institutions, industries, and international organizations working in environmental protection and sustainable development.
Curriculum aligned with HEC standards and focused on Pakistan’s environmental priorities.
Qualified faculty with expertise in environmental science, ecology, and resource management.
Access to modern laboratories and field equipment.
Emphasis on field-based learning, research projects, and community engagement.
Strong linkages with environmental organizations and industries for internships and collaboration.
Focus on developing ethical, responsible, and sustainability-driven graduates.
Intermediate (HSSC) or equivalent qualification in Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering, or ICS with at least 50% marks.
Admission is strictly on merit basis, according to university policy (entry test and/or interview).
In the final year, students complete a research-based project addressing a specific environmental issue. Projects may include water or air quality assessment, waste management solutions, ecological conservation, or renewable energy applications, often in collaboration with local or regional organizations.
Graduates of BS Environmental Sciences are well-prepared for higher education (MS/PhD) in Environmental Science, Climate Studies, Environmental Policy, or Sustainable Development. They will play an active role in shaping Pakistan’s future through research, innovation, and policy development aimed at achieving environmental sustainability and resilience.
