Program Objectives
The MSc (Hons) in Plant Breeding & Genetics program is designed to develop advanced knowledge, practical competence, and research skills in plant breeding, genetics, and crop improvement. The program prepares graduates to contribute to sustainable agricultural development, enhanced crop productivity, food security, and the development of climate-resilient varieties.
The specific objectives of the program are to:
The MSc (Hons) in Plant Breeding & Genetics is a two-year postgraduate degree program that provides comprehensive education and practical training in the genetic improvement of crop plants. The program builds upon fundamental concepts of genetics and plant breeding and incorporates contemporary developments in molecular biology, biotechnology, and quantitative genetics.
The program provides students with opportunities to develop practical skills in field experimentation, hybridization, selection, genetic evaluation, biometrical analysis, and laboratory-based breeding techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on genetic variability, heritability, selection strategies, hybrid development, resistance breeding, and the improvement of crop performance under diverse and changing environmental conditions.
Coursework is integrated with practical activities, research projects, and thesis research to develop students’ scientific, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Students gain experience in designing and conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, interpreting research findings, and communicating scientific results.
The program is supported by qualified faculty members and research facilities that provide students with opportunities for practical learning and research in plant breeding and genetics. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for professional careers in agricultural research, academia, seed and biotechnology industries, government departments, and related agricultural organizations, while also providing a foundation for pursuing PhD studies in Plant Breeding & Genetics and allied disciplines.
Graduates of the MSc (Hons) in Plant Breeding & Genetics program acquire knowledge and practical research skills applicable to crop improvement, agricultural research, seed production, biotechnology, and related fields. The degree provides opportunities for employment in public-sector institutions, universities, research organizations, private seed companies, and other agricultural enterprises.
Depending on their qualifications and professional experience, graduates may pursue careers as:
· Research Officers, Scientific Officers, or technical personnel in agricultural research organizations.
· Plant breeders and researchers involved in crop improvement, genetic resource utilization, and varietal development.
· Professionals in seed production, breeding, testing, certification, quality assurance, and varietal evaluation.
· Research Associates, Lecturers, or academic staff in universities and agricultural institutions.
· Technical and scientific personnel in biotechnology, molecular breeding, tissue culture, and related laboratories.
· Subject specialists, technical officers, or agricultural professionals in government agriculture departments.
· Breeding, production, quality control, or research professionals in public and private seed companies.
· Agricultural advisors and technical specialists supporting crop improvement, production, and extension activities.
· Researchers and technical professionals in national and international agricultural research and development organizations.
· Candidates for admission to PhD programs in Plant Breeding & Genetics, Genetics, Crop Science, Biotechnology, and other related disciplines at national and international universities.
