1. Mission

The Department of Sociology is committed to providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the social, cultural, and institutional dimensions of society and the processes through which societies transform over time. It seeks to prepare students to become informed, responsible, and constructive members of society through a rigorous academic curriculum that develops sociological knowledge, analytical abilities, critical thinking, and an understanding of diverse social realities. For this purpose, the academic programs are designed to enable students to connect their learning with contemporary social challenges and future academic and professional pathways.

2. Vision

The vision of the Department of Sociology is to equip graduates with sound theoretical and practical knowledge of social life through quality teaching, research, critical inquiry, and community engagement. The main aim of the department is to develop socially responsible graduates who can apply sociological knowledge and research skills to understand and address emerging social issues at local, national, and global levels.

3. Introduction of the Department

The Department of Sociology is one of the prominent academic departments of the University of Layyah. It was established in 2010 under the BZU Bahadur Sub-Campus, Layyah. In response to the growing academic and social demands of the region, the Department initiated Master's and Bachelor's degree programs in Sociology.

The academic programs offered by the Department provide students with a broad understanding of society and are designed around a multidisciplinary approach. The Department currently offers Post-AD Sociology and BS Sociology programs, providing students with opportunities to develop theoretical understanding, research competencies, and practical knowledge relevant to diverse social and professional contexts.

Over the years, numerous students have graduated from the Department and have pursued academic and professional careers in a variety of fields. The Department is supported by qualified and dedicated faculty members who strive to facilitate students' academic and professional development. Through comprehensive coursework, research activities, and intensive academic training, the Department seeks to prepare graduates for participation in an increasingly diverse and competitive employment environment.

4. Message from the Head of the Department

The Department of Sociology at the University of Layyah is committed to providing students with a strong foundation in sociological knowledge and equipping them with the ability to apply social research to contemporary social issues and policy development at national and international levels. It seeks to develop students' analytical thinking, critical inquiry, research competencies, and ability to establish meaningful connections among different areas of sociological knowledge and their practical applications in everyday life.

5. Academic Programs Offered

The Department of Sociology currently offers the BS Sociology program in Morning and Evening shifts. The BS Sociology degree is a four-year undergraduate program offered under the Faculty of Social Sciences and conducted according to the semester system.

Eligibility: Candidates possessing F.Sc., F.A., or an equivalent qualification with at least Second Division from a recognized board or university are eligible for admission, subject to applicable university rules and regulations.

6. Program Structure

The BS Sociology program is structured to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of sociological theories, research methods, social institutions, social processes, and contemporary social issues.

7. Research and Publications

Research constitutes an integral component of the academic activities of the Department of Sociology. Faculty members actively contribute to the development of sociological scholarship through research articles, book chapters, and books published in national and international research journals.

Faculty members also contribute to the academic and scholarly community through participation in editorial and advisory boards of reputable journals. The Department encourages students to develop research competencies and supports them in undertaking research and disseminating their findings through appropriate academic platforms.

Graduates may pursue professional opportunities in Social and Medical Welfare, Probation and Parole Services, School Health and Nutrition, Dar-ul-Aman Administration, Prison and Correctional Services, Community Mobilization, Population Welfare, Social Mobilization in NGOs, Social Research, Community Development, Teaching and Higher Education, Development and Social Sector Organizations, and Research and Policy Institutions.

The interdisciplinary nature of Sociology enables graduates to apply sociological knowledge and research skills in a wide range of professional and community-oriented settings.
